Youth Group creates Gingerbread Model of Parish Chapel!

The Junior High Youth Group had a fun and challenging opportunity during the month of November. Elaine Sames (who has experience making gingerbread houses) suggested we enter Philbrook Museum’s annual Festival of Trees (and Gingerbread Houses) Event with a gingerbread model of our parish’s Chapel dedicated to Saint Matthew. Since she offered to help, we couldn’t pass it up, and the Junior High Students and Tim and Tami Yates worked with Elaine for one hectic week to construct the edible model of our chapel, complete with an iconostasis and electric lights to illumine the inside of the model.

Other parishioners helped as well, including Matushka Christy, Luke Arrington, and others who brought supplies, babysat, gave advice, took pictures and washed our dishes, all to help decorate the gingerbread church. Special thanks goes to the younger children of the parish who made sure we didn’t have any extra tootsie rolls or gum drops left over! The Junior High students worked very hard and burned a lot of fingers with the glue gun. And we especially appreciate Elaine, who did most of the work! Thanks Elaine!

We are looking forward to entering again next year. According to Connie Johnson, who attended the exhibit last week, our gingerbread chapel “showed very well” and was already auctioned off in the first days of the event for $50.00. If you are interested in seeing the final result of our effort, you can attend the Festival of Trees at the Philbrook Museum until December 7.
